Cougars outlasted by Lugnuts:
Although the Kane County Cougars (10-20, 43-57) ran out to a first inning lead and had 10 hits, the Lansing Lugnuts (17-13, 53-47) used a pair of deep home runs and a big fourth inning to secure a 4-3 victory. It was the first time the Cougars lost to the Lugnuts since July 16, 2014. Cougars right-hander Emilio Vargas (1-5) lasted 4 innings on 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. His ERA stands at 5.30.
Boomers clobbered by Otters:
The Schaumburg Boomers fell behind early and couldn’t stop the bleeding as they lost the rubber match to the Evansville Otters 14-3 Sunday afternoon. Evansville scored all 14 runs in the first six innings before Schaumburg broke up the shut out in the seventh. Evan Boyd threw a scoreless inning in the seventh in his first appearance since coming back from injury.
Vegas wins Canadian Open:
OAKVILLE, Ontario — Jhonattan Vegas birdied his way off Glen Abbey and waited to see if anyone could catch him. No one could. Vegas rallied to win the Canadian Open on Sunday for his second PGA Tour title, birdieing the final three holes for an 8-under 64 and 1-stroke victory. Vegas had 5 straight birdies on Nos. 2-6, bogeyed the par-4 eighth and also birdied the par-5 13th. He birdied the par-5 16th, par-4 17th and par-5 18th to post at 12-under 276.
Punters killed in car accident:
WAUKESHA, Wis. — Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler died in a car crash in Wisconsin after working at a kicking clinic, a sheriff’s department official said Sunday. LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye was injured in the crash. Waukesha County Sheriff’s Lt. Thom Moerman said speed was likely a factor in the single-vehicle crash that happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Moerman said in a statement that Sadler lost control on the wet pavement, left the roadway and struck a tree.
Broadhurst wins first senior major title:
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Paul Broadhurst won the Senior British Open on Sunday at Carnoustie for his first senior major title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a 2-stroke victory over Scott McCarron. The 50-year-old Broadhurst overcame an opening 75 to become the third English player to win a PGA Tour Champions major, joining Mark James and Roger Chapman. Broadhurst also is the first player to win the event in his debut since Fred Couples in 2012 at Turnberry.
