Young signs with Wolves:
The Chicago Wolves announced Friday that defenseman Gus Young has signed a contract to play for the organization. “He’s just a solid all-around defenseman,” said Wolves general manager Wendell Young. “I think he’s undervalued and he’ll add depth to our blue line.” Prior to joining the Wolves, the 25-year-old Young spent time with the Worcester Sharks (2014-15) and the San Jose Barracuda (2015-16). Through two AHL seasons, Young owns 8 goals and 23 assists in 132 regular-season games.
Cougars struggle in loss:
Pushing their losing skid to three games, the Kane County Cougars (20-27, 53-64) have started the home stand winless, falling in convincing fashion to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (27-20, 63-53) by a 10-1 tally. An error riddled start put the Cougars in a 4-0 hole after the second frame. In total, the Kernels scored in four different innings, and each of the Cougars’ four relievers gave up at least one run.
Boomers rally in extra innings:
AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers fell behind 4-0 in the first but rallied to take a 10-8 decision over the Lake Erie Crushers in 11 innings on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. Lake Erie held leads of 4-0 and 5-2, but the Boomers were able to take a 6-5 edge in the fourth on consecutive RBI-doubles from Mark Nelson and Mike McClellan as Schaumburg scored 2 runs in three straight innings. Lake Erie instantly tied the game and both teams notched unearned runs in the eighth before moving to extras. Following a scoreless 10th the international rule came into effect and Mikal Hill put Schaumburg ahead. Nick Oberg added a 2-run single to account for the final.
Sindelar shoots 4-under:
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio — Former Ohio State player Joey Sindelar shot a 4-under 66 to take the second-round lead in the U.S. Senior Open. One of four former Buckeyes in the field at Scioto Country Club in suburban Columbus, the 58-year-old Sindelar had five birdies Friday, including two in a row after a bogey on No. 5. He had a 5-under 135 total after opening with 69 on Thursday. He made a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th, after pars on the six previous holes.
13-year-old wins Junior PGA:
RUMFORD, R.I. — Lucy Li won the Junior PGA Championship at age 13, a year off LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson’s record in the event. Li, from Redwood, California, closed with a 2-under 69 in hot and windy conditions at Wannamoisett for a two-stroke victory. She finished at 7-under 206 in the rain-shortened event. Thompson won the first of her two titles in 2007 at age 12 at Westfield Group in Ohio. Two years ago at age 11, Li became the youngest qualifier in U.S. Women’s Open history.
Dalton sharp in return:
CINCINNATI — Andy Dalton was sharp in his return, leading the Cincinnati Bengals into field goal range on his only drive during the Minnesota Vikings’ 17-16 preseason victory Friday night. Dalton’s season ended at Paul Brown Stadium last Dec. 13 when he broke the thumb on his passing hand while making a tackle during an interception return. On Friday night, he completed his first 4 passes for 32 yards. He threw too high for A.J. Green on a third-down play, and Mike Nugent was wide right on a 48-yard field goal attempt that ended the drive and Dalton’s day.
Packers edge RGIII, Browns:
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Even without Aaron Rodgers and several other key players, the Green Bay Packers started their delayed preseason schedule with a 17-11 win over the Cleveland Browns on Friday night. The Packers held off the Browns, who are starting anew with Hue Jackson as coach and Robert Griffin III at quarterback. Mason Crosby booted a pair of 54-yard field goals, and undrafted rookie Joe Callahan threw a touchdown pass as the fill-in for Rodgers. Griffin, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner who signed with the Browns after being dumped by the Redskins in March, went 4 of 8 for 67 yards with an interception in a quarter of action.
