Playmakers wanted:
The small number of plays made on the ball by Bears safeties is startling.
They have combined for just 1 interception, by Harold Jones-Quartey. Adrian Amos (876), Jones-Quartey (668) and rookie Deon Bush (333) have played a combined 1,877 snaps but have just 8 pass breakups among them.
“They’ve got to make some more (plays) on their own,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said.
“And they also have to be the byproduct and the beneficiary of good play around them, (like) more harassing of the quarterback, those types of things. So a little bit’s on them and a little bit’s on the unit. I don’t think there’s a great answer there.”
That one hurts:
The high ankle sprain that hindered nose tackle Eddie Goldman for almost the entire season may have been the injury that hurt the Bears’ defense the most.
The second-round pick (39th overall) from Florida State was outstanding as a rookie and considered a player the defense could build around for many years.
But Goldman aggravated the original injury twice more and played in just six games.
“It doesn’t even seem like it was six games because in some of those games he didn’t play much because he was hobbled,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “But when he was healthy, Eddie’s a good football player and would be a good player for any team in this league. We’re hopeful to get him back healthy and playing a full season (in 2017).”
Despite playing just 198 snaps this season, the 6-foot-4, 320-pound Goldman had 2½ sacks after getting 4½ as a rookie.
Injury update:
Outside linebackers Leonard Floyd (concussion) and Pernell McPhee (shoulder) did not practice Friday.
Floyd is doubtful for Sunday, while McPhee is questionable.
Seven other Bears are questionable after limited practices, including outside linebacker Willie Young (knee); safety Deon Bush (ankle); cornerbacks Tracy Porter (knee, shoulder), Bryce Callahan (hamstring, knee), and Cre’Von LeBlanc (knee); offensive lineman Bobby Massie (toe); and quarterback David Fales (right thumb). Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (illness) and running back Bralon Addison (illness) were back to full participation.
For the Vikings, running back Adrian Peterson (knee, groin) and safety Andrew Sendejo (knee) are out and guard Alex Boone (back) and wide receiver Stefon Diggs (hip) are doubtful, as is backup wide receiver LaQuon Treadwell (ankle) from Crete-Monee High School.
