Mayweather to fight McGregor:

LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC star Conor McGregor will meet Aug. 26 in a boxing match that will feature two of the top-selling fighters in the world. The two fighters both announced the fight Wednesday, after months of speculation about whether Mayweather would come out of retirement at the age of 40 to face a mixed martial arts fighter who has never had a pro boxing match. Oddsmakers immediately made Mayweather a big 11-1 favorite in a fight that will take place in a boxing ring and be governed by boxing rules. Mayweather, who retired in September 2015 after winning all 49 of his pro fights, will face the Irish UFC superstar at the MGM Grand arena.

Browns’ Garrett hurts foot:

BEREA, Ohio — Myles Garrett limped off the field Wednesday, a scary sight for the Cleveland Browns. The No. 1 overall draft pick suffered an injury to his left foot late in practice while rushing quarterback Brock Osweiler during a two-minute drill. The severity of the injury is not yet known.

Puig suspended one game:

CLEVELAND — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has been suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for making an obscene gesture to Indians fans on Tuesday night. Puig flashed the middle finger on both hands at fans sitting behind home plate at Progressive Field after hitting a home run in the second inning. Puig is appealing the decision and played Wednesday night.

Fire advances in Open Cup:

FENTON, Mo. — The Chicago Fire advanced to the Round of 16 in the 104th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 win over USL side Saint Louis FC at Toyota Stadium in Fenton, Missouri on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Fire move to 42-14-5 all-time in Open Cup play. The draw to determine opponents and hosting scenarios for the Round of 16 will be held today at 10 a.m. and be streamed live on U.S. Soccer’s Facebook page.

Cougars game rained out:

Wednesday night’s game between the Kane County Cougars and the Peoria Chiefs was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today with two seven inning contests. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 4:30 p.m. Game 2 will start roughly 45 minutes after game one has ended.

Boomers edge Grizzlies:

After failing to hold a seven-run lead in the eighth inning, the Schaumburg Boomers escaped with a 10-9 victory in 11 innings against the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget, Ill., on Wednesday. Schaumburg had a 6-1 lead after two innings, and led 9-2 when Gateway scored seven runs in the eighth to tie the game. The Boomers (21-8) won the game in extra innings on a safety squeeze by Sean Godfrey.

Brookbank joins IceHogs staff:

Sheldon Brookbank, who played for the Blackhawks from 2012-14, was hired by team officials Wednesday to be an assistant coach for their AHL affiliate in Rockford. This will be the first coaching job for the 36-year-old native of Lanigan, Saskatchewan. The defenseman played in 351 career NHL games with the Hawks, Predators, Devils and Ducks.
