Location of new D59 HQ a really bad idea

To the editor: Let me get this straight. School District 59 needs a new office building … touting, among other things, the need for a larger facility for districtwide meetings for teachers.

So the powers-that-be selected a site that is: 1) within a quarter of a mile from the extreme southwest corner of the district; and 2) just off Biesterfield Road — which is so choked with rush hour traffic that Elk Grove Village has had to put out street signs redirecting ambulances to wind through residential streets in order to avoid stopped traffic on both Arlington Heights and Biesterfield roads, just to get to Alexian Brothers Medical Center on Biesterfield.

Which part of the traffic impact study did the school board not read? There was such a study, right?

Let’s have the teachers add another hour to their day away from their prime responsibility — the children — while commuting to and from this non-central Central Administration facility. Maybe the board and the superintendent’s staff should introduce a new course of instruction for themselves: Facility Planning 101.

Food pantry benefits from carriers’ drive

To the editor: The annual Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive in May was once again a giant success. Schaumburg Township Food Pantry received more than 7,500 pounds of groceries.

We would like to send out a huge thank you to our generous community. The pantry serves between 600-700 households every month and depends on community support. Contributions will help fill our pantry shelves for weeks to come.

We are grateful to the Schaumburg Postal Service Carriers who helped to make this food drive possible. We also appreciate the community volunteers who helped out, in addition to volunteers from Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg who helped sort and box all the donations, as well as a big thank you to Riccardo’s Restaurant in Schaumburg for feeding the volunteers during our food drive.

We appreciate all the community support for we could not help so many without it.

Call General Assistance (847) 884-0030 for additional information or assistance. Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Recent Garden Club sale a big success

To the editor: On behalf of the Rolling Meadows Garden Club, I would like to thank the community members who came to shop on what was truly a very cold day Saturday, May 14. The club and the crafters were happy to see you. I know your gardens will be brightened by the flowers and plants you purchased.

The support and help of the Rolling Meadows Park District is without a doubt, a big part of our success. We could not do this without you!

This sale is our main fundraiser to support our programs and very important to the club.

We invite anyone interested in gardening to join our friendly group. Our meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at the Community Center. Also watch for information about our annual Garden Walk, planned for June 26.

I would also like to acknowledge the Daily Herald and their various print and online community bulletin boards that help to spread the word far and wide.

Volunteers make Candy Days happen

To the editor: On the last weekend of April, Misericordia Home (a residential home for children and adults with mental and/or physical challenges) held its 31st Candy Days fundraiser. Despite the challenging spring weather, thousands of volunteers fanned out across Chicago and the suburbs, walking back and forth at intersections, standing at corners, waiting at train stations and storefronts to collect donations for Misericordia.

We are so grateful to everyone who participated in this large and crucial effort, including the residents of Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights and the surrounding area for contributing so generously to this cause.

We also wish to thank our volunteers, many of whom have donated their time even though they do not have a resident at Misericordia. Some of our volunteers have helped out for years; some were new this year. From the Cub Scouts to a group of Hersey High School students, the Misericordia Family members and many caring friends, we could not do this without you.

Thank you again for your generosity. It will truly make a difference in the lives of Misericordia’s residents. Hope to see you next year — the last Friday and Saturday of April!
