Court upholds Auschwitz guard’s conviction:
BERLIN — A German federal court has rejected a former Auschwitz death camp guard’s appeal against his conviction for being an accessory to murder, a decision greeted Monday as setting an important precedent for future prosecutions of Holocaust perpetrators. Oskar Groening, now 95, was convicted in July 2015 of being an accessory to the murder of 300,000 Jews and sentenced by a court in Lueneburg to four years in prison. Judges found that he knew Jews were being slaughtered and supported the killings through his actions.
Britain picks new leader to replace Farage:
The British political party that helped carry the nation toward an exit from the European Union picked a former top deputy as its new leader Monday to replace the firebrand Nigel Farage as he shifts to building his personal ties with President-elect Donald Trump. The selection of Paul Nuttall, a European Parliament member, seeks to end internal turmoil within the U.K. Independence Party as it tries to chart a path without the charismatic but combative Farage, who led the party’s anti-E.U. attacks before June’s referendum that backed leaving the 28-nation bloc.

Texas announces first local Zika case:
DALLAS — Texas on Monday reported its first case of Zika virus that likely came from a mosquito bite within the state. Florida is the only other state in the U.S. with locally spread Zika. Health officials say that the woman who was infected in Texas is a resident of Brownsville, on the border the state shares with Mexico. But health officials said she reported no recent travel to Mexico or any other country with ongoing Zika outbreaks. Until the Florida cases, all the cases in the U.S. were connected to travel to countries with outbreaks, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Zika is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, though sexual transmission can occur. The Texas case was confirmed last week by a lab test. Officials say testing indicates the virus can no longer be spread from her by mosquitoes.

A video posted on Facebook by a passenger shows a man standing in the aisle, yelling and insulting supporters of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
