No charges against police:

Prosecutors won’t charge Chicago police officers in connection with the in-custody death of a 24-year-old burglary suspect whose arrest was captured by dashcam video. State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said prosecutors can’t “prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers used excessive force” in arresting Heriberto Godinez in July 2015. She said Thursday that an independent medical examiner confirmed Godinez died of cardiac dysrhythmia brought on by cocaine and alcohol. Godinez’s sister has filed a federal lawsuit alleging police use of excessive force led to her brother’s death.

Judge to review case files:

Fifty years after a 21-year-old woman was killed in her home in Kenilworth, police are fighting the release of documents in the case, arguing the investigation remains active. The Chicago Tribune reported that a Cook County judge ordered Kenilworth officials to hand over some of the paperwork Wednesday so she can determine whether the large case file should be allowed to remain confidential. The question about the files arose days before the 50th anniversary of the crime, which occurred Sept. 18, 1966, because New York lawyer John Kelly sued Kenilworth after it denied his Freedom of Information Act request to view the documents. Kelly said he doesn’t represent any potential party in the case but is pursuing his own inquiry as a former prosecutor and current civil litigator.

Shooting caught on video:

A home surveillance camera has captured video of a robber riding up on a bicycle and shooting a 71-year-old Chicago man who was watering his lawn in the middle of the day. The Chicago Tribune said a neighbor gave the newspaper a copy of the video, which was broadcast on local TV stations. It shows two young men or teenagers riding up to the man Tuesday. One of them shoves him to the ground, shoots him in the abdomen and rifles through his pockets. The shooter then casually gets back on his bike and rides down the sidewalk. The victim, clutching his abdomen, staggers into a yard and makes a call on a cellphone. Details on his condition weren’t released.
