Friends declined Fernandez:
MIAMI — Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was a patron at a Miami River bar and restaurant the same night he and two friends were killed in a boat crash, a spokeswoman for the establishment confirmed Tuesday. A friend of one of the victims said he warned him against the post-midnight trip, and Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna said he and at least two other teammates turned down invitations to go and tried to discourage Fernandez from going out. American Social Bar & Kitchen spokeswoman Dana Rhoden said in an email that Fernandez was there before the accident.
Injuries, suspension for Nats:
NEW YORK — Washington Nationals pitcher A.J. Cole has been suspended for five games and fined for throwing a pitch near the head of Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang on Saturday. Cole appealed the punishment announced by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. The 24-year-old right-hander is a long shot to make Washington’s postseason roster. Additionally , all-star catcher Wilson Ramos was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his right knee. Ramos is out for the rest of the season. Along with Ramos, Washington is unlikely to have pitcher Stephen Strasburg in the first round because of a strained flexor mass in his right elbow.
Blue Jays reliever out:
TORONTO — Blue Jays reliever Joaquin Benoit will miss the rest of the regular season after tearing his left calf muscle when he tripped and fell while running in from the bullpen the second time benches cleared during Monday’s 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees. Benoit expects to be out for at least two to three weeks.
Watt could miss rest of year:
HOUSTON — A person familiar with J.J. Watt’s condition says he has re-injured his back and the Houston Texans expect him to be out until at least December, and possibly the entire season.The team hasn’t confirmed the injury. Watt missed training camp and Houston’s four preseason games after surgery in July to repair a herniated disk in his back. He started each of the team’s three regular-season games and got hurt again Thursday against the Patriots..
NU to have games at Allstate:
Northwestern says it will play home basketball games during the 2017-18 season at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont while its arena undergoes a $110 million renovation.
