For this week’s #tbt photo gallery, we take a look back 43 years at Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday to remember men and women who died while serving in the armed forces. It is observed every year on the last Monday in May.

What started as Decoration Day after the Civil War, it became an official federal holiday in 1971. In 1974, it was celebrated much the same as it is today, with veterans and school bands marching in parades, spectators waving flags and veterans taking part in Memorial Day events.
