Aurora police continue reviewing video and interviewing witnesses after a weekend altercation between a group of motorcyclists and the driver of a pickup truck, a department spokesman said Tuesday.

“No charges or citations have been filed yet, but they have not been ruled out,” spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email.

Aurora police gave this account in a statement provided by Ferrelli:

At roughly 12:50 p.m. Sunday, an officer saw a large group of motorcyclists driving recklessly and disobeying traffic signals near West New York and River streets.

The officer drove his squad car slowly into the intersection after turning on his lights and siren to try to get the riders to slow down. When he did so, one of the motorcyclists used his bike to block the officer’s squad car from moving and waved the rest of the riders through the intersection. The group continued around the squad car.

Minutes later, A 44-year-old man from Yorkville told police he had been driving a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck west on Galena, just east of Edgelawn, before changing lanes in an attempt to move away from the group.

When he stopped in traffic, several of the riders appeared to be upset with him, possibly for changing lanes, police said. One man got off his motorcycle, walked up to the pickup and punched the 44-year-old man through the open window, police said.

After the driver punched back, several motorcyclists “began to attack him and his vehicle,” police said.

In an attempt to escape, the man drove off road through the grass and a parking lot at the northwest corner of Galena and Edgelawn, went south through the intersection and then circled back east when officers arrived, police said.

The truck hit one of the motorcycles driven by a 28-year-old from Melrose Park man, police said. The man declined medical treatment.

Both the pickup truck driver, who was not injured, and the motorcyclist were the only occupants of the vehicles.

The damage to the man’s truck was estimated around $1,050, police said.

A message left with Chicago United Riders, a group that shared video of the encounter on its Facebook page, was not returned.
