Military through the ages: A timeline re-enactment featuring a wide span of military encampments throughout history, ranging from ancient Rome through Operation Desert Storm, is presented from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, on the picnic grounds. Visitors learn firsthand how soldiers lived and fought during different eras and see the progression of weapons, clothing and technology over time. The encampments, in chronological order, facilitate self-guided walking tours, with living-history actors available to interpret and answer questions. Free with $5 parking.

Dahlia show: An exhibition of approximately 300 dahlia blossoms, some the size of dinner plates, is hosted by the Central States Dahlia Society and Southtown Dahlia Club from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in the Education Center. The display include two how-to video presentations. Free with $5 parking.

Hayride tour: Savor the colors of early autumn from a tractor-pulled hay wagon from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 4, starting the Visitor Center. Groups of 10 or more are asked to register in advance by calling (630) 260-8162. Free with $5 parking.

Tea 101: Enjoy an informative hour about tea with Sarine Crotteau from SereneTeaz in Glen Ellyn at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Visitors Center. Guests hear a brief history of tea and discuss how varieties of tea are different in both processing and taste, then try some tea samples and learn how to prepare them properly. Children’s book fair: Browse a wide selection of books for young readers during the Cantigny Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Visitors Center, Free with $5 parking.

Pumpkins and treats: Enjoy a Pumpkins and Treats Family Night with a Halloween theme from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Visitors Center. Costumes welcome. Crafts, pumpkin decorating and trick-or-treating. Free with $5 parking.

Boo Bash: Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to an hour of not-too-spooky activities and stories, ending with a treat, from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the Education Center. For ages 3 to 5 with adult. Cost: $10 per child. Register: cantigny.org or (630) 260-8162.

Murder mystery: Make this a Halloween to remember by enjoying cocktails, a meal and solving the “Mystery of the Class of ’57” from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the McCormick Mansion. Catapult contest: Teams build a working catapult, a device once used in medieval warfare, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 29, on the Parade Field.
