



Communities throughout Lake County will commemorate Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 29, with parades and ceremonies. Here are some of the events planned in and around Lake County:
Friday, May 26
College of Lake County: Noon, A Wing Auditorium, Room A011, College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. The 10th annual College of Lake County Memorial Day ceremony will feature keynote speaker Congressman Brad Schneider and master of ceremonies Mike Peck, superintendent of the Lake County Veterans Assistance Commission. Other speakers include CLC Board of Trustees Chair Richard Anderson, American Legion Post 964 Chaplain and member of CLC’s Student Veterans Club Eliseo Lopez, President of CLC’s Student Veterans Club Jessica Lopez, and CLC’s veteran student services coordinator Joe Bochantin. Sunday, May 28
Round Lake Beach: 2 p.m. village of Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center, 2007 Civic Way Center, Round Lake Beach. The Illinois Brass Band, winner of six North American Band Association awards, will perform a free concert.
Monday, May 29
Barrington: 10:30 a.m. Parade starts with a flag raise and salute at the Veterans Monument at Main and Cook streets and proceeds west on Main Street and south on Dundee Avenue to Evergreen Cemetery, where a service will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, including a reading of the names of veterans from Barrington who have passed in the last year, poems, songs from Barrington choir students, a 21-gun salute, and taps. Buffalo Grove: 11 a.m. Knopf Cemetery on Arlington Heights Road, north of Checker, Buffalo Grove. The event, sponsored by Kingswood United Methodist Church, includes a Boy Scouts flag

Deerfield: 10 a.m. Veterans Memorial in Jewett Park. The American Legion will hold services, followed by a procession to the Deerfield Cemetery. Visit www.deerfield.il.us.
Essence of Freedom Run: 7:30 a.m. to noon starting at 849 Waukegan Road, Deerfield. A 5K or 10K run that raises funds for veterans and active duty armed forces through Illinois veteran assistance organizations. Registration is $40 for the 5K or $55 for the 10K; active duty personnel, including police and firefighters, can register for free. Fox Lake: 11 a.m. Fox Lake Metra station, Nippersink Boulevard and Grand Avenue, Fox Lake. After the ceremony, a second memorial will be held outside the American Legion hall, 703 N. Route 12, followed by a spaghetti dinner. Free. Visit foxlakeamericanlegion.org.
Fox River Grove: 8:30 a.m. Parade lineup begins at 8 a.m. at Algonquin Road School. Parade will proceed on Algonquin Road to South River Road and head to the baseball diamond along the Fox River in Lions Park. Visit www.carygrovechamber.com.
Grayslake: 9:30 a.m. The parade will step off from the Hillside Avenue parking lot across from Grayslake Central High School, and travel south on Lake Street, then east on Park Avenue. The memorial ceremonies will take place immediately following the parade at the Millennium Court Veteran’s Memorial site, one block north of Park Avenue, near the downtown clock tower at the corner of Seymour Avenue and Center Street. Gurnee: Noon at Veterans Memorial Park, 100 N. O’Plaine Road, in front of the Gurnee Police Department. Hosted by American Legion Post 771 and the village of Gurnee. In case of rain, the ceremony will move to the American Legion Hall, 749 N. Milwaukee Ave. Visit www.gurnee.il.us.
Island Lake: 3 p.m. Veterans Park, 432 W. State Road, Island Lake. Program will feature special remarks by life members of Island Lake VFW Post 2486. Music by the Northern Illinois Pipes and Drums Band and guest speakers. Visit www.villageofislandlake.com.
Lake Villa: Noon. Parade begins at Palombi Middle School, 133 McKinley Ave., and travels to Lehmann Park, 89 Cedar Ave., Lake Villa, where the VFW will hold a ceremony. Call (847) 356-6100 or visit www.lake-villa.org.
Lake Zurich: 10 a.m. Parade steps off from the American Legion Hall, 51 Lions Drive, and proceeds to the Veterans Monument, 200 Mohawk Trail. A commemorative service will immediately follow. Visit www.alpost964il.org.
Libertyville: 9:30 a.m. Parade steps off from the Metra station, followed by a ceremony at Cook Park. Participants include the VFW, American Legion, Scout troops, honor guards, community organizations and the high school band. Visit www.libertyville.com.
Lincolnshire: 10 a.m. Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive, Lincolnshire. An event to honor veterans, including a color guard, brass band and guest speaker. Visit www.village.lincolnshire.il.us.
Lindenhurst: 10 a.m. Ceremony at the Lindenhurst Veterans Memorial at the entrance to the Lindenhurst village hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the public works garage behind the village hall. Visit www.lindenhurstil.org.
Mundelein: 10 a.m. Parade lineup will take place at the Mundelein Metra Station, 205 N. Archer Ave. Because of the Hawley Street Construction Project, the 2017 parade route will proceed on Division to Pershing to Memorial Park. Veterans may wear uniforms or hats indicating their branch of service. Scout groups and other groups can also participate in the parade. Visit www.mundelein.org.
Palatine: Service starts at 10 a.m. and then the parade starts at 10:15 a.m. Parade starts at the Hillside Cemetery and ends at the intersection of East Wood Street and Northwest Highway, just east of the Palatine Village Hall. Led by Palatine VFW Post 690. There will be another ceremony at the Legion Memorial in Towne Square at 150 W. Round Lake Area: Opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the American Legion, 111 E. Main St. in Round Lake Park, and travels down Cedar Lake Road to Claredon Drive in Round Lake Beach, where a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Visit www.rlchamber.org.
Wauconda: 10 a.m. Parade starts at 600 N. Main and proceeds to Memorial Park, 176 and Main Street, Wauconda. Includes several local groups marching.
