


DePaul’s January earns honor:
DePaul guard Jessica January was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on Monday. The Blue Demon senior averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals at the Gulf Coast Showcase over the weekend.
Big Ten fines Michigan:
The Big Ten has reprimanded Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and fined the school $10,000 for violating the conference’s sportsmanship policy by criticizing officials after the Ohio State game on Saturday. The conference made the announcement Monday. Harbaugh blasted the officiating after the Wolverines’ 30-27 double-overtime loss in Columbus, Ohio, saying he was “bitterly disappointed” during a lengthy rant.
Kentucky, ’Nova still on top:
Kentucky and Villanova remain the top two teams in The Associated Press college basketball poll while Baylor made the week’s biggest jump, from No. 20 to ninth. The Kentucky Wildcats (6-0) received 40 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel while Villanova, also known as the Wildcats, was No. 1 on 20 ballots. North Carolina (7-0), which moved up one place to third after winning the Maui Invitational, got four No. 1 votes.
Sabres’ Eichel could play soon:
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jack Eichel says he’s cleared every hurdle in recovering from a sprained left ankle, and Buffalo Sabres coach Dan Bylsma says there’s a possibility the center will make his season debut at Ottawa on Tuesday. Bylsma said “we’ll see,” but noted he liked what he saw out of Eichel during practice Monday. The final test is whether the player will have any setbacks before game time.
Irish, UConn sitting pretty:
NEW YORK — Notre Dame and UConn still sit atop The Associated Press women’s basketball poll while Colorado, Auburn and Texas A&M all entered the Top 25 for the first time this season. The Irish remain No. 1 with the Huskies right behind them. Notre Dame received 16 first place ballots with UConn getting 14. Third-ranked South Carolina garnered the other three from a 33-member national media panel Monday. Baylor and Maryland each moved up one spot to round out the first five teams.
