Towns is Rookie of the Year:

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns is the unanimous winner of the NBA Rookie of the Year award. The league made the announcement Monday, giving the Wolves back-to-back honorees after forward Andrew Wiggins took the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy last season. The 7-foot Towns received all 130 first-place votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters in the United States and Canada, joining Damian Lillard (2013), Blake Griffin (2011), David Robinson (1990) and Ralph Sampson (1984) as recent unanimous winners. New York’s Kristaps Porzingis finished second, and Denver’s Nikola Jokic was third. The first pick in the 2015 draft, Towns ranked eighth in the NBA in rebounds and field-goal percentage and was one of only six players in the league to start all 82 games.

Torre says discipline coming:

PHOENIX — MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre says discipline is obviously coming for those involved in Sunday’s melee between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers, “hopefully” as soon as today. At a news conference Monday before the Arizona Diamondbacks-New York Yankees game, Torre said of the punch that the Rangers’ Roughned Odor connected with the jaw of Toronto’s Jose Bautista, “it certainly wasn’t pretty and I hate seeing that stuff.” Torre said it’s tough enough staying healthy in baseball without contributing to an incident that “could keep you out of the ball game or end your career.” Torre said he would meet Monday night with Joe Garagiola Jr. — MLB’s senior vice president of standards and on-field operations — and issue a statement “hopefully” by today.

Woods ‘progressing nicely’:

BETHESDA, Md. — Tiger Woods grimaced as he took three warm-up swings after sitting in a chair for 30 minutes on a cool, blustery Monday morning at Congressional talking about his upcoming tournament.His efforts at Congressional — home to the Quicken Loans National, which he hosts and which benefits his foundation — put to rest most of the lingering questions about whether he will be ready to return to competitive golf anytime soon. “I have been practicing at home, and I’m progressing nicely. I’m hoping to play,” he said.Woods, who underwent two back surgeries last fall, said he’s getting stronger and hitting the ball better. The tournament at Congressional will be played June 23-26, the week after the U.S. Open, and it certainly appears that Woods, 40, will attend only in a noncompetitive role.

Pacers promote McMillan:

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers have promoted assistant Nate McMillan to head coach, ending the search for Frank Vogel’s replacement after less than two weeks. McMillan spent 12 seasons as the head coach in Seattle and Portland, going 478-452 in the regular season and 14-20 in the playoffs. He was hired by Vogel in 2013 and spent the past three seasons with the Pacers, where he developed relationships with the players and president of basketball operations Larry Bird. McMillan already had a bond with Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard from their days in Portland.

Former Laker McMillian dies:

LOS ANGELES — Jim McMillian, who helped the Los Angeles Lakers to a 33-game winning streak and the 1972 NBA championship, died Monday. He was 68. He died from complications of heart failure at a hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, according to his sister-in-law Denise Sheridan. The Lakers made McMillian the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 1970 draft out of Columbia University. He averaged 15.3 points during three seasons in Los Angeles. He was a key member of the Lakers’ first championship team in the city. He averaged 19.1 points on that 1972 title team.

76ers 1st for jersey sponsorship:

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have become the first team in the NBA to put a sponsorship logo on player uniforms, striking a deal with StubHub for a spot on one of the hottest pieces of real estate available in sports. StubHub, a website that connects ticket buyers and sellers, will have its logo appear on the front left of the jersey in 2017-18 for the start of a three-year trial period. The patches will appear opposite Nike’s logo, and measure about 2½-by-2½ inches. StubHub’s jersey patch will be included on all jerseys sold at Sixers’ home games.
