For Big Ten, expansion does not appear on horizon:
ROSEMONT — While the Big 12 mulls adding members, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez sounded like he wasn’t quite sure what to make of the view from the sideline with the Big Ten. On the one hand, he said watching from a distance is “kind of interesting.” On the other? “When you’re not involved, it’s kind of boring,” Alvarez said. The Big Ten not too long ago was one of the key players in the waves of expansion that reshaped the college landscape in recent years, adding Nebraska and then Rutgers and Maryland. But don’t expect the conference to grow from 14 anytime soon. Athletic directors gathered at the Big Ten headquarters for meetings this week said the topic has not been discussed.

Two Alabama players arrested:
MONROE, La. — Alabama offensive lineman Cam Robinson and reserve defensive back Laurence “Hootie” Jones have been released from jail after their arrest on drug and weapons charges. Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s records show Robinson and Jones were cited Tuesday for the misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon in the presence of narcotics. Robinson also faces a charge of felony possession of stolen firearms. “We are aware of the situation involving Hootie Jones and Cam Robinson and are in the process of gathering facts to determine what internal action needs to be taken,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement. Robinson and Jones were released on bond Tuesday morning. Monroe police detective Chris Bates said the players were arrested early Tuesday morning after an officer smelled marijuana coming from a parked car in a closed public park. When the officer approached the car, he saw a handgun in Jones’ lap, Bates said in a written statement released Tuesday evening. A search of the car then turned up marijuana and a handgun that had been reported stolen in Baldwin County, Alabama, Bates’ statement said. Both players are entering their junior seasons.

Boomers fall to Crushers in extras:
AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers, rallied from a 3-0 deficit but ultimately dropped a 5-4, 11-inning decision to the Lake Erie Crushers in the first game of a three-game set Tuesday night.
Lake Erie grabbed a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two in the fourth against Schaumburg starter Brett Mabry. Struggling to put runners aboard against a bullpen by committee, the Boomers broke through for a pair of runs in the sixth. Michael Valadez drove home a run with a bases loaded groundout. Paul Kronenfeld scored on a wild pitch. Kronenfeld evened the game with a solo homer in the eighth off Lake Erie closer Trevor Longfellow. Ino Patron singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th before Lake Erie notched a pair of unearned runs in the bottom to win.
Mabry tossed six innings and allowed just three runs in a no-decision. The start marked the second quality start of the young season by the Boomers. Dexter Price was saddled with the loss. Derek DeYoung and Patrick Dolan each worked two scoreless frames. Kronenfeld picked up a pair of hits to pace the offense. All four games this season have been decided by two runs or less with three by just a single tally and two in extra innings.
The series continues with a quick turnaround. RHP Josh Heddinger starts in a 10:05 a.m. (Central Time) game against RHP Fernando Gallegos.
