Barkin’ for Bunco: 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, Huntley American Legion, 11712 Coral St., Huntley. Henning Estates will sponsor Barkin’ for Bunco, in partnership with Hoof Woof & Meow Animal Rescue. Bunco is an easy-to-learn game and there will be a practice session before the official first game. Fast-paced group fitness hikes provide one hour of heart-pumping exercise in a friendly group atmosphere. Features a new preserve each week. Restoration Workdays: Various days, Lake County Forest Preserves. Grab work gloves and join other volunteers to save some of Lake County’s natural areas. Upcoming workdays include: Rollins Savanna, 20160 W. Washington St., Grayslake, and Ryerson Woods, 21950 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods, at noon Saturday, Oct. 22; and Ela Prairie at Cuba Marsh, 24205 W. Cuba Road, Deer Park, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, and 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Volunteers should dress in long pants and sturdy shoes; bring work gloves. No prior experience is necessary. Naturalist Mark Spreyer: 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, Norton’s USA, 400 Lageschulte St., Barrington. Naturalist and author Mark Spreyer will be visiting Norton’s USA with an owl from Stillman Nature Center. He will also be available to sign his new book, “Natural Digressions.” Free.
CROCtoberfest: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, Wildlife Discovery Center, 1401 Middlefork Drive, Lake Forest. During this event for all ages, meet live crocodilians, including Bubba the world-famous American alligator, who will be appearing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Experts will be on hand to talk about crocodiles and their kin while also providing close-up encounters with a variety of reptiles. There will be kid-friendly activities, face painting, the Wildlife Discovery Center’s Wildside Store, food and refreshments. Admission is a requested donation of $10 per person, which will help the Wildlife Discovery Center care for their resident alligators and crocodiles. A portion of the proceeds will help support crocodile conservation. Visitors must use the free shuttle bus service at the Lake Forest Hospital Staff Parking Lot, which will run every 15 minutes.
