Attorney talks combined case:

An attorney for a Chicago police sergeant facing dismissal over the shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014 says he opposes combining his client’s case with that of the officer who fired the fatal shots and three other officers. Sgt. Stephen Franko’s attorney, Thomas Pleines, spoke Monday at a Chicago Police Board hearing. Pleines says Franko “wasn’t even at the shooting.” But an attorney for the city says Franko signed paperwork “hours following the shooting.” The city wants to consolidate the cases to save resources. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson moved last month to fire Officer Jason Van Dyke, three other patrol officers and Franko. Video released last year showed Van Dyke shooting the 17-year-old McDonald 16 times. Van Dyke has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Pregnant woman shot, killed:

Authorities in Chicago say a 19-year-old pregnant woman has been killed in a shooting that left another man injured. The Cook County medical examiner identified the victim of the shooting as 19-year-old Parasha M. Beard. Police say she and a 26-year-old man were shot in the South Chicago neighborhood about 6:10 p.m. Sunday. Police say she was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The two victims were in a parked car when another vehicle drove past and someone fired shots.

No injuries in Midway fire:

Chicago firefighters say no one was hurt after a small fire developed on an airplane at Midway International Airport. The fire department says the blaze was reported in the engine compartment of a plane near Gate 7 shortly after noon Monday. The blaze was put out with an extinguisher. No passengers were aboard.
