Khans to speak in Rosemont:

The Pakistani immigrant parents of an American soldier who died fighting in Iraq are to speak at a convention in suburban Chicago next month. Khizr and Ghazala Khan will speak Sept. 3 at the Islamic Society of North American convention in Rosemont. About 15,000 people are expected to attend the event, which runs from Sept. 2 to 5. The Khans became well-known after Khizr Khan spoke out about GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump during the Democratic National Convention. The Chicago Tribune reports that organizers of the event said the Khans are expected to address a crowd of about 10,000. The nonprofit group’s president, Azhar Azeez, said the Khans’ words and courage have inspired thousands of Muslims. The group does not endorse political parties or candidates.

100th save with naloxone:

Lake County law enforcement officials Tuesday reported their 100th save from opioid overdose using the opioid antidote naloxone since December 2014, police said. The 100th save was made Sunday. “One hundred saves is an amazing accomplishment, and I couldn’t be more proud of the law-enforcement approach throughout Lake County,” said Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran. The Lake County sheriff’s office saved 21 of the 100 lives.

Boy, 10, shot in Chicago:

The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in Chicago says he is in critical condition after undergoing surgery. Mellanie Washington said her son, Tavon Tanner, started yelling “I can’t breathe” and vomited blood after the boy was shot in his back Monday evening at about 10:15 p.m. He was sitting on the porch of his family’s West Side home. Washington said the bullet damaged her son’s pancreas, intestines, kidneys and his spleen, which was removed. Washington said Tuesday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital that she has “faith in God that he’s going to pull through.” Police said they had no one in custody.

Warning for Red Line riders:

According to ABC 7, Chicago police issued a warning Tuesday for CTA Red Line riders after a series of armed robberies on trains headed northbound toward Howard. Police said there have been two separate armed robberies in the past week near Jarvis and Paulina streets. In both incidents, the offenders exited at either Jarvis or Howard streets, police said. Two or three men approached the victim with a knife and demanded their personal items. Both robberies happened around 2 a.m.

Schools employee killed:

An ABC 7 reports says a 29-year-old CPS employee was fatally shot over the weekend in the city’s South Deering neighborhood, CPS and police said. Luis Marin was a security guard and basketball coach at Clay Elementary, according to Chicago Public Schools. Marin was shot several times in the head about 4:25 a.m. Sunday in the 11600-block of South Torrence. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:05 a.m., according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
