Going back to school means shopping for all the school supplies, the notebooks, pens and pencils.

Back-to-school shopping also means picking out those right fashion pieces for that first day and every day after.

Sara Skirboll, resident shopping and retail research and trends expert for RetailMeNot, found in a recent back-to-school survey 76 percent of parents will be purchasing clothing for children. A trend they also noticed is 65 percent will search for deals when shopping, showing that more shoppers are becoming more savvy and saving money whether shopping online or in the stores. They also found the focus on saving money is not solely by the parents.

“More and more parents are starting to teach their kids about saving money and spending a little bit more wisely, and more and more parents are actually teaching their young children to search for deals,” Skirboll said.

As parents and kids search for that back-to-school wardrobe, here are some of the fashion trends that Skirboll said will be a perfect fit for elementary and middle school students.

Movie/TV

Movie and TV inspired apparel and school supplies are always a hit. Star Wars, Angry Birds and Finding Dory will be the top three hottest trends followed by Frozen and Spongebob Squarepants. Find these characters on T-shirts, lunch boxes, backpacks and even notebooks and binders.

Backpacks

These are becoming a great way for students to show self expression. Recognizing that kids are enjoying the opportunity to pick out their own backpack, store shelves may feature more than just solid colored backpacks. Abstract prints, neons, stripes and metallics will get big in mid-August and September as we get closer to the back-to-school season.

Sneakers

These are making a comeback. In many elementary and middle schools, the students are required to wear a closed toe shoe. So girls and boys will be looking for unique sneakers, whether it be slip on or lace up and will look for top trends in patterns, which include metallic, abstract prints, neon and stripes.

Graphic tees

nce a popular item for high school and college students, now they are making their way into the children’s department. Kids will see T-shirts with positive messaging on the front and in bright colors particularly for girls. Younger girls are starting to understand what it means to be positive about all facets of their life, and girls will start to see that come to life through fashion.

Plaid

Plaid is a fall staple for kids of all ages. It can be seen on t-shirts, button-downs, pants, sweaters, coats, hats and even shoes. There are multiple shades to choose from, so parents can scoop up a few different pieces for their kids,” she said.
