After rain suspended Barrington’s softball game on Tuesday, the Fillies reigned in the bottom of the fifth inning with 6 runs on Wednesday en route to a 9-1 triumph over No. 6-seeded Crystal Lake South in the semifinals of the Class 4A Hampshire regional.
Top-seeded Barrington (32-3) will play the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 4 Hampshire and No. 5 Dundee-Crown in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship.
Nursing a 2-1 lead, a one-out line drive single to right field by sophomore Kendall Peterson (2-for-4, 2 runs) ignited the 6-run fifth inning in which the Mid-Suburban League champions sent 10 batters to the plate.
Highlighting the inning were RBI singles by Tori Meyer (2-for-4) and Abbey Jacobsen along with an RBI groundout by Rachel Krzysko.
Other multiple hitters for the Fillies were Haley Luczak (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Rachel Mori (2-for-3, RBI).
Junior Catherine McMahon (21-2) handled the mound duties, throwing a 7-hitter with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.
“It was impressive to watch our team play under pressure today,” said Barrington coach Perry Peterson, whose IHSA postseason record improved to 60 games over .500 (87-27) in 26 seasons. “The girls came focused and ready to play.”
Elk Grove 10, Streamwood 0 (5 inn.): Senior Kylie Thomsen (14-6) threw the second no-hitter of her career by blanking the visiting No. 13-seeded Sabres with 7 strikeouts in the semifinals of the Grenadiers’ own Class 4A semifinal.
Thomsen also belted her 14th homer of the season while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Other multiple hitters for the Grens (25-9) were seniors Jessica Kearns (2-for-3) and Amy Pietruszynski (2-for-3).
Freshman Katia Pendowski added a double for No. 4 Elk Grove (26-9), which will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship against the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between No. 6 Bartlett and No. 12 Prospect.
Hersey 9, Grayslake North 5: The No. 4-seeded Huskies (23-7) led 9-4 after two innings over No. 13 Grayslake North (13-20) en route to their victory in the semifinal of the Class 4A Loyola sectional held in Glenview.
Sophomore Sarah Bailitz (11-2) earned the win in a game that was pushed back to a 7 p.m. start due to field conditions.
Makayla Tsagalis (double), Hannah Graf and Sofia Cano (double) each had 2 hits for Hersey while Katie Wingerter, Brianna Luciano and Jackie Bednar (double) each had 2 RBI.
The Huskies will face the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 5 Carmel and No. 12 Loyola in Saturday’s 10 a.m. title game.
St. Viator 14, Elmwood Park 4 (5 inn.): Senior Cam VamValkenburg led off the bottom of the first with her first home run of the year and the No. 14-seeded Lions never looked back against No. 13 Elmwood Park in the St. Viator Class 3A regional semifinal.
St. Viator strung together 5 consecutive singles for 5 runs in the first inning.
The Lions put the game out of reach in the second inning when they scored 8 more runs, the highlight being a grand slam by senior Adeline Swiderski.
Senior Grace Kaiser earned the win while junior Haley Robinson and senior Jenna Breslin (double) each had 3 hits for Viator, which advances to Saturday’s championship against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 5 Vernon Hills and No. 12 Chicago (Northside).
Schaumburg postponed: The ninth-seeded Saxons’ semifinal game against No. 8 Lake Park in the Lancers’ Class 4A regional was postponed on Wednesday and pushed back to Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Buffalo Grove postponed: No. 11 Buffalo Grove’s semifinal in the Zion-Benton Class 4A regional against No. 6 Lake Zurich was postponed and moved to Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Grant 6, Cary-Grove 5: During the middle of the softball season, Jaylee Pfau’s at-bats had gone the way of the “P” in her last name.
Silent.
The Grant freshman wasn’t making much noise defensively, either. So Grant coach Chris Van Alstine sent her down to the JV team.
“It was to build my confidence back up,” Pfau said. “I was struggling at the plate and in the field. My confidence was just really down.”
No longer.
“It’s great,” a smiling Pfau (rhymes with ‘wow’) said of her confidence, which got another huge boost Wednesday.
Pfau hit an opposite-field single into right field with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and Liz Schram scored on an errant throw home, as second-seeded Grant edged No. 8 Cary-Grove 6-5 in a Class 4A regional semifinal at Prairie Ridge in Crystal Lake.
The victory advanced Grant (25-9) to Friday’s 4:30 p.m. final against No. 7 McHenry (14-19). The Bulldogs are seeking their first regional championship since 1996.
Cary-Grove, which started three freshmen and two sophomores, finished 12-19. The Trojans’ got 3-hit games from senior Alyssa Gurgone and sophomore Emma Hill, but the game ended on C-G’s fourth error.
“I think we play a tougher schedule than most teams, so we took our lumps at the beginning of the season,” Cary-Grove coach Tammy Olson said. “We learned a lot. We had a lot to learn. We have seven underclassmen, and they’re good. They’re definitely solid hitters. Defense will come along.”
