Frog sculptures: Ribbit! The Exhibit, showcasing 23 whimsical, larger-than-life frog sculptures fashioned from copper by North Carolina artist J.A. Cobb, are on display through Sunday, Sept. 25. Each frog has his or her own name, story and personality.
Twilight adventures: Hike, do activities and roast marshmallows before going on a silent tram ride through the woods after dark from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Children must be accompanied by an adult registrant; have at least one adult per five children and dress for the weather. Cost: $19.
Theatre-hikes: Travel to the ancient Mediterranean for a crash course in all things Greek in this spoof, “The Iliad, the Odyssey, and all of Greek Mythology, in 99 Minutes or Less” by Jay Hopkins and John Hunte at 1 p.m. weekends in August. A low-impact hike suitable for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs on Sunday, Aug. 7. Each performance lasts approximately two and a half hours. Comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, chair or blanket, water bottle and insect repellent recommended. Cost: $20 adults, $10 children ages 2-17.
About butterflies: Children ages 3-5 years hike, listen to stories, and play games in this interactive sensory-based class from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, or Wednesday, Aug. 17. Dress up like butterflies, sip some nectar and play butterfly seek and find. Adults must accompany children. Cost: $25.
Beautiful butterflies: Toddlers ages 18 months to 35 months hike, listen to stories, and play games in this interactive sensory-based class from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, or Tuesday, Aug. 16. Dress up like butterflies, sip some nectar and play butterfly seek and find. Adults must accompany children. Cost: $22.
Shorebird identification: Learn the identifying characteristics of local shorebirds from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 14. Learn the types and characteristics of shorebirds found in northern Illinois in the classroom, then spend a morning searching local hot spots to identify these birds in the field. Cost: $76.
Garden campout: A family campout is held 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, to Saturday, Aug. 13, in the Children’s Garden. Visit hands-on activity stations and enjoy snacks, night hikes and bedtime stories. In the morning, wake to the sound of birds singing before enjoying a light breakfast and a chance to explore the Children’s Garden with your family before it opens to the general public. Cost: $37. The rain date is Aug. 13-14.
Bikes and bites: Cyclists and foodies, enjoy vehicle-free roads, music, and a social featuring food trucks with dishes for purchase from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Free with Arboretum admission.
Clearance sale: Shop at The Arboretum Store’s semiannual clearance sale and save on home decor, jewelry, desktop, apparel, books, and more from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday, Aug. 14.
Hooray for Herpetology: Meet some live amphibians and reptiles that will slither their way to your heart from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. The Children’s Garden hosts Lake View Nature Center and introduce us to their slimy and scaly friends.
Sunrise/sunset yoga: Release tension in this soothing yoga class promoting deep, slow moving stretches and meditation for complete relaxation from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, and 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25. Cost: $19 per class. For ages 18 and older.
Farm-to-table: Experience elegant outdoor dining at a one-of-a-kind meal featuring fresh, local ingredients from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, under the White Pine Pavilion. Cost: $90. Info: mortonarb.org.
Tree walk: Enjoy a stroll along tree-lined trails with an arboretum expert from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Cost: $25.
Green cleaning: Make your own environmentally friendly household cleaners from 6:30 to 8 p.m. from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 27. Make five sample recipes in class. Cost: $34.
Wine and art walk: Sip wine and shop for art as you stroll around the arboretum’s picturesque Meadow Lake from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27 and 28. View nature-themed artwork from Midwest artists and enjoy live music. Art show is free with admission; fee for the wine and other beverages.
Bonsai for beginners: Learn the art of bonsai during this six-week, hands-on course from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 28 and Sept. 11 through Oct. 9. Cost: $229.
Woods and wine: Wednesdays, Woods and Wine Wednesdays are from 5:30 to 8 p.m. throughout August in the arboretum’s courtyard. Unwind with live music, drinks and light fare on warm summer evenings. Ages 21 and older. No advance registration required. Cost: $15.
Family nights: Thursday Family Nights are from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout August in the Children’s Garden. Enjoy live music, kid-friendly fare, and entertainment after-hours; no registration required. Cost: $5.
Acorn Express: Take a family-friendly tram ride adventure through the arboretum from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday and Fridays through August. Destinations to hike, make a craft, and explore new topics each week. Cost: $5.
Explorers backpack: Rent a self-guided family backpack and enhance your visit to the Children’s Garden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through August. Backpack rental includes science tools, guides and fun props to explore nature as a family. Cost: $5.
Reptiles and amphibians: Find out some fun facts about all of the reptiles and amphibians in Illinois, and use a rock to design your own herpetological “pet” to take home in this self-guided hands-on discovery activity in the Children’s Garden from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in August.
Frogtastic play: Hop, croak, and splash your way into imaginative play from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in August in the Children’s Garden. Self-guided hands-on discovery activity.
Garden story time: Gather at 11 a.m. Fridays in August in the Children’s Garden for a nature-themed story and fun. Free with arboretum admission.
Tree pose yoga: Experience nature from a new angle through fun animal and tree yoga poses from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays in August in the Children’s Garden. Young students learn about the environment while stretching, moving, and breathing like the creatures around them. Held outdoors if the weather allows. Cost: $17.
