Climate Lobby-Fox Valley: The Fox Valley Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin, 39W830 Highland Ave. It will begin with a meet-and-mingle at 6:30 p.m. The screening will begin at 7 p.m. It will feature the acclaimed National Geographic series “Years of Living Dangerously,” which has helped to focus national attention on climate change and the organizations working on solutions that individuals, communities, companies, and governments can use to address it. Fox River Valley DAR: Do you have a relative who was a patriot in the Revolutionary War? A genealogical workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Huntley Area Public Library, 11000 Ruth Road. Genealogists will be on hand to assist any prospective members or family members of prospective DAR members to find and prove their lineage to a Revolutionary War patriot and assist with new member applications. Dundee Lions: The Dundee Township Lions is hosting its annual Christmas tree sale. The selling of Christmas trees is the largest fundraiser for the Lions Club. All profits from the sales go to support many community charities such as the FISH Food Pantry, Community Crisis Center, Boys and Girls Club, and numerous other charities. The sale, which began Nov. 25, continues each Thursday through Sunday until all the trees are sold. In addition to trees, there will be wreaths, garland and centerpieces for sale.

Algonquin Lions: The Algonquin Lions Club is hosting its annual Christmas tree and Wreath Sale at Algonquin State Bank on Randall Road, which began Nov. 25. They will again be selling Michigan-raised quality Fraser fir trees ranging in size from 6 to 12 feet. Wreath sizes are 24 and 36 inches. Sale hours are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. As a courtesy, the Lions also trim the bottom of the tree and will tie the tree to the buyer’s vehicle. Elgin Kiwanis: Topical programs are fixtures of the weekly meetings of the Kiwanis Club of Elgin.

On Dec. 20, Tom Peterson, a retired WGN News director, talk show host, voice-over talent, consultant, world traveler and cocktail party guest, will regale the club with many delightful stories.

On Dec. 27, Phil Schneider, librarian at the Gail Borden Public Library, will offer a glimpse into the living room of the future: the living room with no cable. He will demonstrate all the new devices and technologies available to today’s consumers.

The Kiwanis Club of Elgin, now in its 96th year, received its charter March 9, 1920, and serves the Kiwanis International mission, to change the world one child at a time, one community at a time. In that time, the Elgin noon club donated over $1 million to organizations in Elgin and South Elgin.

Elgin American Legion: American Legion Post 57, 820 N. Liberty St., Elgin, hosts a variety of activities and events which are open to the public. The hall is available for rental for any event. There will be WRMN Radio Road Shopping Show Thursday, Dec. 22, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

On the fourth Wednesday of each month, there will be a Veteran Service Officer at Post 57 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next one will be Dec. 28. For Kane County residents, the Service Officer will be from the Kane County Veterans Service Commission. For Cook County residents, the Service Officer will be from the Hanover Township Veterans Service Department. Stop by for its weekly Family Burger and Steak Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, except Dec. 29. A new addition to the menu is a barbecue rib dinner, either full or half-slab. It also features the popular pull-tab game, “Lightning,” and the chance to win cash prizes. Or enjoy the weekly Friday Night Fish Fry from 4 to 7 p.m., except Dec. 30. It features your choice of haddock, perch, catfish, and shrimp with all the trimmings.

The American Legion serves lunch specials from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The kitchen will be closed Dec. 26-30. The prices for lunch specials are reasonable and vary depending on what is being served that day. Friday lunches include fish fry and fried chicken. The Legion serves East Side Café pizzas, a seven-inch pizza for $3 or a 12-inch pizza for $7, in many varieties. Post 57 also invites the community to bingo every Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. with Early Bird Bingo, and regular bingo at 2 p.m. It is also offered on Fridays with Early Bird Bingo beginning at 7 p.m. and regular bingo at 7:30 p.m. There will be no bingo Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.

Sun City Model Train Club: The Kishwaukee Valley & Eakin Creek Model Railroad Club invites the community to stop by the annual Holiday Display in the Prairie Lodge Social Lounge, 12880 Del Webb Blvd. in Huntley. The event will run through Wednesday, Dec. 28.

This year, the club will raffle off three Lionel O gauge Polar Express trains, made famous by the 2004 movie. The raffle date is set for Friday, Dec. 23. Winners need not be present.

Art for All: Stop by the Art for All of Elgin’s annual Winter Show and Competition at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. The show, which continues through January, in on exhibit on the second floor of the library.

Art for All member artists will enter a single favorite piece for the exhibit to be judged by a professional in the field of art. Cash prizes provided by Art for All will be awarded to the winning entries.

Visitors will experience diversity of both style and artistic medium in the exhibit. An invitation is extended to all to view the show, which will be appropriate for all ages. Take a stroll through the exhibit, enjoy the submissions, and find your personal favorites. The majority of works will be available by sale through direct communication with the artists.

VFW Post 1307: The Watch City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 is hosting a “Queen of Hearts” raffle Thursdays at the post home, 1601 Weld Road on Elgin’s west side. The drawings are held at 7 p.m. sharp, with thousands of dollars in jackpots. Tickets are on sale all week at the VFW canteen bar.

Join them for Lightning, five fast-paced bingo games, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Video gaming is available. All veterans, and supporters of veterans, are welcome to stop by to socialize and play a few games.
