CHAMPAIGN — Maverick Morgan scored 16 points, leading Illinois to a dominating 85-69 victory over Michigan on Wednesday night.
Illinois (12-5, 2-2 Big Ten) changed up its lineup after its 96-80 loss to Indiana on Saturday and the improvements showed as six different players finished in double figures.
The Wolverines had a 4:30 field-goal scoring drought and the Illini put together a 17-2 to close the first half for a 49-36 halftime. DJ Wilson led Michigan (11-6, 1-3) with 19 points and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman added 14 points.
Creighton 75, Butler 64:
OMAHA, Neb. — Maurice Watson Jr. scored 21 points and No. 8 Creighton matched its best start in program history with a victory over No. 12 Butler. The Bluejays (16-1, 4-2 Big East) rode hot shooting in the first half to build a big lead that Butler (14-3, 3-2) couldn’t overcome with star Kelan Martin still struggling with his shot.
Louisville 85, Pittsburgh 80:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Quentin Snider scored 22 points, including 2 free throws with 25.3 seconds remaining, and Deng Adel added a free throw 8 seconds later as No. 14 Louisville survived Jamel Artis’ career-high 43 points to outlast Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals appeared in good shape with a 59-35 lead midway through the second half before Artis’ 32-point second half rallied the Panthers within 81-76 with 45 seconds remaining. Donovan Mitchell made one of two from the line before Snider and Adel added critical free throws to provide a cushion as Louisville (14-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its second straight.
Artis was 15 of 22 from the field with seven 3s while Michael Young added 17 for Pittsburgh (12-5, 1-3).
UNC 93, Wake Forest 87:
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Justin Jackson hit a huge 3-pointer with 1:03 left and No. 11 North Carolina did just enough to hold off Wake Forest. Jackson finished with 19 points for the Tar Heels (15-3, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Kennedy Meeks added 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Bryant Crawford scored 22 points for the Demon Deacons (10-7, 1-4).
Wichita State 87, Loyola 75:
WICHITA, Kan. — Markis McDuffie hit four 3-pointers and scored 26 points to lead Wichita State to a win over Loyola.
McDuffie finished 8 of 11 overall from the field and hit 6 of 7 free throws. Landry Shamet finished with 11 points while Darral Willis Jr. and Daishon Smith each chipped in 10 for the Shockers (15-3, 5-0 Missouri Valley).
Doyle scored 23 points and Aundre Jackson added 18 to lead the Ramblers (12-6, 2-3), who are now 0-8 against the Shockers since joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 2013.
Michigan St. 65, Minnesota 47:
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Miles Bridges scored all 16 of his points in the first half, helping Michigan State build a huge lead it used to cruise to a victory over No. 24 Minnesota.
The Spartans (12-6, 4-1 Big Ten) started the night in a five-way tie atop the conference with the Golden Gophers (11-7, 3-2) and moved a half-game ahead of No. 17 Purdue, Maryland and Nebraska.
Marquette 89, S. Hall 86 (OT):
MILWAUKEE — Markus Howard had 22 points and Katin Reinhardt made 4 free throws in the final 29 seconds of overtime to help Marquette beat Seton Hall.
The Golden Eagles (11-5, 2-2 Big East) took the lead for good at 79-78 on Howard’s pair of free throws with 3:57 left in overtime.
The Pirates (12-4, 2-2) hung close and could have forced another overtime on Myles Powell’s 3-point attempt that missed long at the buzzer.
Illinois State 60, SIU 53:
CARBONDALE — DJ Clayton scored 13 points and Deontae Hawkins had 11 as Illinois State beat Southern Illinois to remain undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference. Paris Lee added 10 points for Illinois State (13-4, 5-0), which has won six straight and is tied with Wichita State (15-3, 5-0) atop the conference.
Denver 84, Western Illinois 70:
DENVER — Joe Rosga scored 25 points and added a career-high 9 rebounds as Denver opened up a two-game homestand with a win over Western Illinois.
Rosga hit four 3-pointers and finished 7 of 11 overall from the field for the Pioneers (10-7, 2-2 Summit), who snapped a two-game skid. Garret Covington led Western Illinois (6-10, 3-2) with 17 points.
