DETROIT — Tai Odiase and Dominique Matthews scored 16 points apiece to help No. 6 seed Illinois-Chicago hold off third-seeded Green Bay for a 79-70 victory Sunday in the Horizon League Tournament. UIC (15-17) will play No. 10 Milwaukee in the tournament semifinals today.
Matthews hit a 3-pointer midway through the second half to spark a 17-2 run that put the Flames on top 68-52 with 4:42 left.
Green Bay went 0-for-11 from the field during a nine-minute stretch in the second half that included UIC’s breakaway but then dug in and used a 10-0 run late in the game to cut the deficit to 72-70 with 1:08 left. Green Bay’s James Hurdle had two 3-pointers during the run, but the Phoenix didn’t score again as UIC sealed it from the free-throw line.
Tarkus Ferguson added 12 points and 10 rebounds for UIC to get his sixth career double-double.
Kerem Kanter led Green Bay (18-13) with 19 points and Hurdle had 11.
Wichita State 71, Illinois State 51:
ST. LOUIS — Conner Frankamp scored 19 points and Markis McDuffie added 16 as No. 21 Wichita State defeated Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game Sunday, earning an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
After splitting their regular-season series and sharing the conference championship, Wichita State left no doubt as to whom the top team in the MVC was this season.
The Shockers (30-4), the No. 2 seed, have won 15 straight games since losing at Illinois State on Jan. 14. The No. 1-seeded Redbirds (27-6) had won eight straight games since losing at Wichita State on Feb. 4.
Landry Shamet added 14 points for Wichita State. Paris Lee, the MVC’s player of the year, led Illinois State with 18 points, while MiKyle McIntosh scored 16.
Iowa 90, Penn State 79:
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Senior star Peter Jok scored 20 of his 21 points in the second half and Iowa throttled Penn State, closing the regular season with 4 straight wins.
Nicholas Baer added 20 with 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (18-13, 10-8 Big Ten), who finished above .500 in conference play for the third year in a row.
Josh Reaves had 25 points for the Nittany Lions (14-17, 6-12). They went on a 12-0 run and later closed with 5 straight baskets to make the final score look closer than the game actually was.
Wisconsin 66, Minnesota 49:
MADISON, Wis. — Senior guard Bronson Koenig scored 17 points in his final home game, combining with D'Mitrik Trice to give No. 22 Wisconsin's offense a second-half boost in a victory over Minnesota.
The Badgers (23-8, 12-6 Big Ten) secured the second seed in the conference tournament and got a sorely needed confidence boost to end the regular season after having lost five of their previous six games. Nate Mason had 17 points for Minnesota (23-8, 11-7). The Golden Gophers had won eight straight.
Michigan 93 Nebraska 57:
LINCOLN, Neb. — Derrick Walton Jr. scored 18 points and set a school record with 16 assists, and Michigan routed Nebraska for the Cornhuskers' worst home loss in program history. Michigan set the Pinnacle Bank Arena record for points by an opponent and matched the arena record for 3-pointers with 14.
The Wolverines (20-11, 10-8 Big Ten) led by as many as 38 points, and the final margin was the biggest in a Nebraska home loss since Ohio State won 79-45 at the old Devaney Center in January 2012.
Nebraska (12-18, 6-12) finished the regular season with losses of 16, 16, 15 and 36 points.
Women
UConn 78, UCF 56:
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Gabby Williams and Napheesa Collier each scored 16 points as top-ranked UConn (31-0) defeated UCF (20-11) in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Crystal Dangerfield added 14 points and Katie Lou Samuelson had 12 for the Huskies, who extended their NCAA record winning streak to 106 games and will play for their fourth consecutive AAC Tournament championship tonight. UConn has never been beaten by a conference opponent in the four-year history of the league.
DePaul 92, Seton Hall 60:
MILWAUKEE — Chante Stonewall had a career-high 20 points, Brooke Schulte scored all of her 16 points in the first half, and No. 18 DePaul (25-6) cruised past Seton Hall (12-19) in the Big East Tournament. Jacqui Grant scored 13 points, Tanita Allen added 11 and Amarah Coleman 10 for top-seeded DePaul.
