St. Viator’s girls volleyball team knows how to give an encore.
One week after going 5-0 in the West Chicago Invite, the Lions did it again in their on tournament on Saturday in Arlington Heights.
The Lions defeated Rolling Meadows (18-25, 25-18, 15-11), Bolingbrook (25-19, 25-13), Fenwick (25-23, 25-12) and East Aurora (25-12, 25-18) in pool play before a 28-26, 24-26, 15-11 triumph over Keith Country Day in the title match.
The sweep gave the Lions one of their best starts (19-4) in coach Charlie Curtin’s 11 seasons.
Fenwick was third followed by Carmel, Bolingbrook, Timothy Christian, Rolling Meadows, Elk Grove, East Aurora and Larkin.
Senior Catherine Hickey led the Lions for the day with 69 kills, followed by Kate Nottoli (29), Kendall Claffey (24), and Rina Rodriguez (12) while Nottolo was also tops in blocks with 5.
Michaela Mueller directed the offense as usual, collecting 135 assists from 470 sets. Carrie Leazer chipped in 12 assists while leading the back row with 69 digs followed by Mueller (27), Taylor Pfaller (19) and Claffey (18).
The Limestone-bound Hickey also led the Lions with 17 aces while Pfaller had 9.
Rolling Meadows (10-12) went 3-2 and posted its wins over East Aurora (23-25, 25-12,15-5), Bolingbrook (26-28, 25-15 15-13) and Elk Grove (25-17,25-11).
Macie Robinson served 14 aces and collected 48 digs for Mustangs whose offense was set by Natalie Klancnik (65 assists, 18 digs, 2 aces) and Mallory King (36 assists, 7 aces).
Junior Eleanor Errico led in kills (43) and blocks (12). Klancnik added 20 kills followed by Leticia Avellaneda (16), Elise Kowalski (14), Natalie Anderson (7), Ashlyn Ryan (6) and Caroline Slowik (4).
Maine East Invite: Mid-Suburban East leader Hersey (12-4) took second place in Park Ridge as it earned two-set wins over Maine South, Lake Forest, Leyden and Warren (25-18, 25-16 in semifinals) before falling to Naperville North in the title match (25-21, 25-19).
The Huskies were led on attack by Kati Kaburov (32 kills), Amy Morgan (27), Alessia Olhava (17), Hayley Martin (17) and Juliette Vandenherik (12). Setting up the offense were Olhava (60 assists, Emma Strozewski (37) and Molly Twohig (8).
Twohig also collected 52 digs followed by Morgan (42), Olhava (33) and Kaburov (29). Janine Boyan led with 9 blocks while Vandenherik and Kaburov had 7 apiece
Morgan served 10 aces while Twohig, Strozewski and Kaburov each had 7.
“We played some great volleyball this weekend,” said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. “We played consistently until the final match, when we got beat by a very strong Naperville North team. It was a great tournament for our young team.”
Maine West (10-6) defeated Prospect 22-25, 25-22, 25-23 on Saturday but lost to Maine South (24-26, 20-25) to end up in tenth place.
The Warriors defeated champion Naperville North 18-25, 25-16, 15-13 and went 2-1 in Friday’s pool. But they were still third in the pool due to tiebreakers.
Ally Block (55 assists, 32 digs, 5 aces), Christy Kolosvary (36 assists, 29 digs, 3 aces), Jessica Riedl (35 kills, 6 blocks, 4 aces), Sophia Saldana (38 digs, 5 aces), Reilly Olson (32 kills) and Amanda Grzebien (33 digs, 6 aces) led the Warriors.
Prospect went 1-4 in the invite, earning its win over Deerfield on Friday night.
Leading the attack for Prospect (3-9) were Meghan Meredith (24 kills), Emma Cogan (23), Sloane Petlak (21), Grace Cacini (17) and Colleen Palczynski (11). Sarah Skaggs collected 54 assists and 25 digs while Gianna Russo had 36 assists.
Valerie Thomas served 5 aces and collected 56 digs in the tourney. Cogan had 29 digs.
Meredith also led with 9 blocks and Petlak had 4.
Leyden (3-10) went 0-5 in the invite. Leading the Eagles statistically were Camryn McGee (15 kills, 5 aces), Kim Silva (11 kills), Destiny Corral (21 kills, 2 aces), Andrea Horvath (54 assists, 5 aces), Bea Verin (31 digs, 2 aces) and Jenna Meyers (11 kills).
Glenbard West Invite: Fremd (10-6) took second place after going 3-0 in pool play and defeating Joliet West in the semifinals.
Glenbard South defeated the Vikings 25-20, 25-17 in the championship match.
Seniors Sarah Straup and Jess Rizzo were named to the all-tourney team.
