


Caps get Shattenkirk from Blues:
WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. Washington sent a 2017 first-round pick, conditional 2018 second-round pick, forward Zach Sanford and minor leaguer Brad Malone to St. Louis in the deal that also sent former Capitals goaltending prospect Pheonix Copley to the Blues. The teams announced the deal Monday night. Shattenkirk, 28, is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has 42 points on 11 goals and 31 assists this season and has 66 goals and 218 assists in 471 NHL games. He counts $4.25 million against the salary cap this season. The Blues retained 39 percent of his salary.
Steelers sign Brown to big deal, place franchise tag on Bell:
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Brown to a new five-year contract on Monday, following through on a promise the club made last summer to take care of the perennial All-Pro as soon as he had just one season left on the six-year deal he signed in 2012. The team also placed an exclusive rights franchise tag on Bell, opening the negotiating window to reach a long-term agreement with him by the start of training camp. Brown’s new contract runs through 2021 and will pay him over $72 million and makes him one of the highest paid non-quarterbacks in the league.
Former Bears coach Trestman heads back to CFL:
Jim Popp and Marc Trestman are together again, as the CFL Toronto Argonauts have agreements in principle for Popp and Trestman to become the club’s GM and head coach, respectively. Trestman was the Bears head coach in 2013, a post he held for two seasons before being fired after compiling a 13-19 overall record.
Sky acquire Ndour from Stars:
The Chicago Sky have acquired forward Astou Ndour from the San Antonio Stars in exchange for forward Clarissa Dos Santos. The 6-foot-5 Ndour played in 30 games for the Stars in 2016 and averaged 6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
January given Big East honor:
After missing two months with a hand injury, DePaul’s Jessica January had a dominant weekend that included a triple-double that resulted in being honored Monday as the Big East player of the week. In her first game back last Friday, the senior guard had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with 4 assists and 3 steals in a victory over Villanova. Two days later, January finished with 16 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over Georgetown.
NU’s Coffey, Deary named to All-Big Ten teams:
Nia Coffey was named First Team All-Big Ten, and Ashley Deary won Defensive Player of the Year along with earning second team all-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Bandits name new assistant coach:
The Chicago Bandits have named Kyla Holas as the team’s assistant coach, general manager Toni Calmeyn announced Monday morning. Holas, who most recently served as the head coach at the University of Houston from 1999-2016, compiled an impressive 563-376-1 record with the Cougars.
