Here are some of the highlights from Day 9 in Rio:
Singling out greatness: Andy Murray is making a habit of accomplishing things that hadn’t been done in a while. Or ever. Murray became the first tennis player in Olympic history with two singles gold medals, winning his second in a row by wearing down Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the Rio de Janeiro Games in a final th lasted a tad more than 4 hours Sunday. At the 2012 London Olympics, Murray won a singles gold and mixed doubles silver at the All England Club.
Japanese jamboree: Kei Nishikori gave Japan its first Olympic tennis medal in 86 years, overcoming a mid-match lull to beat 2008 champion Rafael Nadal for the bronze in men’s singles. Nishikori won the third-place match 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-3 after blowing a 5-2 lead in the second set. Nadal leaves Brazil with a gold medal from men’s doubles for Spain.
Golden Max: Max Whitlock delivered Britain’s first gold medal in gymnastics — but he wasn’t able to savor the moment. He had to quickly turn his attention from the floor exercise to the pommel horse competition. He won gold there, too.
Another broken record: Exploding out of the blocks in lane eight, Wayde van Niekerk didn’t see another runner during the entire Olympic 400-meter final. He didn’t need to. It was just him against the clock. The South African sprinter broke Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old world record on Sunday night in Rio de Janeiro, leaving two of the greatest one-lap runners of this era in his dust. Van Niekerk finished in 43.03 seconds — 0.15 seconds faster than Johnson ran on Aug. 26, 1999 in Seville, Spain.
Felix qualifies: World champion Allyson Felix ran a season-best 49.67 to lead the qualifiers into the women’s 400-meter final. Felix is running only in the 400 after missing a chance to defend her Olympic 200-meter title by failing to make the U.S. team. She went out hard and coasted to the finish ahead of Shaunae Miller, the world championship silver medalist of Bahamas. There’ll be three Americans and two Jamaicans in Monday’s final.
