EAST LANSING, Mich. — Alvin Ellis III scored 16 points, Cassius Winston had 15 and Nick Ward added 11 as Michigan State made the most of a fast start in a 61-52 win over Northwestern on Friday night.

It was the third win in a row for the Spartans (10-5, 2-0 Big Ten), who led 28-9 in the first half before Northwestern (12-3, 1-1) got going. The Wildcats finished the half on a 20-8 run to pull to 36-29 at the break.

Sanjay Lumpkin’s 3-pointer early in the second half cut the Spartans’ lead to four, 36-32. Michigan State led 48-44 with 11:29 left and the Wildcats didn’t get closer.

Vic Law had 16 points and 9 rebounds while Scottie Lindsey added 11 points for the Wildcats (12-3, 1-1), who went cold down the stretch and shot just 35.8 percent (19 of 53) from the floor.

Kansas 86, TCU 80:

FORT WORTH, Texas — Frank Mason III scored 22 points and No. 3 Kansas won its 12th consecutive game and 26th straight conference opener, beating TCU to start Big 12 play.

Senior Landen Lucas had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to help the Jayhawks (12-1, 1-0) hold off the Horned Frogs (11-2, 0-1), who led by 10 points in the first half and stayed close after winning 11 of their first 12 under first-year coach Jamie Dixon, a former TCU guard.

Baylor 76, Oklahoma 50:

NORMAN, Okla. — Johnathan Motley had 19 points and 13 rebounds as undefeated Baylor jumped on Oklahoma early and breezed to a victory in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

The fourth-ranked Bears (12-0, 1-0) remain one of five unbeaten teams in Division I.

Valparaiso 70, UIC 59:

Tevonn Walker scored 23 points, and Alec Peters added 18 points and 11 rebounds as Valparaiso beat Illinois-Chicago, its 16th straight win over the Flames, in a Horizon League opener.

Walker was 8 of 9 from the field, and Peters was 5-of-15 shooting from the field and has scored in double-figures in every game this season for the Crusaders (11-3).

Tarkus Ferguson scored 16 points to lead Illinois-Chicago (7-7).

Central Michigan 90, Chicago St. 82:

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Josh Kozinski tied a career best with six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 20 points, David DiLeo had a double-double and Central Michigan (10-3) held on for a win over Chicago State (4-12).
