Queen for a Day in Elgin:
The YWCA Elgin’s annual Queen for a Day event is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at Elgin Country Club. It brings together mothers, daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters for a morning of fun — featuring live music, entertainment, a kids craft, raffles and a brunch to benefit the YWCA’s programs. Each adult reservation comes with a chance to become the “Queen for the Day” or one of three “Ladies-in-Waiting,” and each child reservation comes with a chance of being crowned the “Princess.” Each member of the royal court wins a gift basket of prizes, including gift cards and jewelry. Community supper in Batavia:
The Bethany Community Supper is offered the last Friday of each month. The community is invited to the next supper from 5 to 7 p.m. this week in the fellowship hall at Bethany Lutheran Church, Lincoln and Wilson streets, Batavia. Bob Leonard 5K Sunday:
The River Corridor Foundation and the St. Charles Kiwanis Club host the Bob Leonard 5K Run and a 1K Family Color Run Sunday in and around Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles. Fees are $35 for the 5K Run or $40 for both events, $20 for the Color Run (12 and older) or $10 for kids 12 and younger in the Color Run. Both events start and end at the Grand Pavilion in the park, with the 5K Run at 7:30 a.m. and the 1K Color Run at 9 a.m. Register at signmeup.com/113228.
Civil War re-enactment:
Stanford’s Battery Re-enactors Group hosts the Carpentersville Civil War Re-enactment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7 at Carpenter Park, off Maple Avenue. See Civil War blacksmithing, mounted cavalry, cannon presentations with spectator participation, Civil War battles and music. There will be live action Civil War-era skits performed by the Dundee-Crown High School Drama Club. Activities for kids include a stamp collecting hunt and drilling with wooden rifles. Bird walk Aug. 6 in Batavia:
Join the Kane County Audubon for a bird walk at 8 a.m. Aug. 6 at Nelson Lake/Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia. Meet in the parking lot by the silo, on Nelson Lake Road, three-quarters of a mile south of Main Street. Shakespeare in Wheaton:
“Twelfth Night” will take the stage at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 and 27 at Memorial Park, 208 W. Union Ave., Wheaton as part of the Shakespeare in the Park program sponsored by Wheaton Park District and Wheaton College Arena Theater. Shakespeare in the Park employs a mix of student and professional actors, many of them college alumni. Along with securing corporate sponsorships, organizers are seeking help from the community through a GoFundMe campaign called “Back the Bard 2016: Twelfth Night” at gofundme.com/wpdshakespeare2016, where individuals can make donations. Those who give $25 or more will receive a limited-edition Shakespeare in the Park T-shirt.
