San Francisco-based Friedkin Realty Group acquired the Kingston Pointe apartment complex in Des Plaines for about $42 million, investor Mort Friedkin said Monday.

Friedkin, who founded the Friedkin Realty Group, also owns other apartment complexes in Aurora, Naperville, Bloomingdale, Elk Grove Village and Wheaton. He said he is seeking more to buy, since his firm is always in the market for apartments, retail buildings and community centers.

“You just never know,” Friedkin said. “It all depends on what opportunities present themselves. It’s like dating. Sometimes you feel like you will never meet the right one and then you suddenly do.”

He said the 144-unit apartment complex in downtown Des Plaines is in good shape, though he might update some of the amenities and landscaping. The amenities include fitness center, swimming pool, on-site management and heated garage parking.

The complex was originally built as condos about five years ago. It offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units with floor-to-ceiling windows, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and in-unit washers and dryers.

“Suburban luxury apartments near transportation continue to attract renters and investors alike,” John Jaeger, who represented the owners of Kingston Pointe in the sale, said in a statement.

“The convenience and flexibility they offer to residents, ranging from young professionals to empty nesters, has become a very popular lifestyle choice for many. I don’t see this trend changing anytime soon,” Jaeger said.
