Girl, mom charged in stabbing:
Chicago police say a 13-year-old girl and her mother have been charged with fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl during a fight outside an apartment complex on the city’s Englewood neighborhood. Police say the girl was charged Tuesday as a juvenile with first-degree murder in the death of DeKayla Dansberry, a high school freshman. Police say her mother, 35-year-old Tamika Gayden, provided the knife used in the killing and is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in addition to murder. It wasn’t immediately known if either have legal representation. Police say the stabbing occurred during a fight Saturday. Dansberry later died at Stroger Hospital. DeKayla’s parents say they didn’t know what the fight was about.
Charges filed against cop:
Official misconduct charges were filed against a Chicago police officer accused of punching and pushing a man who hit him after being transported to a hospital. Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Theresa Smith said Tuesday that Officer Clauzell Gause was captured on hospital surveillance footage punching and shoving the 24-year-old victim. The man was being transported by Gause and another officer for a mental health evaluation at Jackson Park Hospital on the night of June 3, 2014. Smith says the man, who punched the officer, was eventually restrained and handcuffed, after which Gause allegedly pushed him into an observation room and punched the man several times. Gause was released on his own recognizance.
Chicago debates Airbnb rules:
The debate over regulating short term home rentals through companies like Airbnb has come to Chicago. A City Council panel heard testimony Tuesday on a proposal to limit the number of units rented per building, require city registration and impose a surcharge to pay for homeless services. Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration has been drafting regulations for months. Aldermen in bustling neighborhoods claim Chicago isn’t protecting homeowners who end up next to de-facto hotels and that revolving visitors change a neighborhood’s character. However, proponents say rentals help supplement income and boost neighborhood businesses.
Officials estimate Chicago has roughly 6,000 units rented through sites like Airbnb and HomeAway. Other cities have passed regulations including Philadelphia and San Francisco. Airbnb opposes the proposal, saying short-term rentals help local economies, including helping homeowners avoid foreclosure.
Olympian dies in crash:
A Chicago native and two-time Olympian who later became the first black woman to coach at Ohio State has been killed in a car crash in Ohio. The State Highway Patrol says 74-year-old Mamie Rallins died Monday in a multivehicle crash near Port Clinton, where she lived. Investigators say Rallins’ car crossed the center line and struck two tractor-trailers before colliding with another car. No one else was seriously injured. She ran track at Tennessee State and competed as a hurdler at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. She later helped start and coach the women’s track and cross-country teams at Ohio State in the mid-1970s.
