Wheeling’s village manager will get a 5 percent pay raise this year, along with $5,000 in deferred compensation, after receiving a positive performance review, officials said.

The village board Tuesday unanimously approved the increase and new benefit for Village Manager Jon Sfondilis. His salary in 2017 will rise to $185,000 from $176,284.

Village President Dean Argiris praised Sfondilis’ work ethic and said he and the manager work together well.

“I think he’s probably one of the hardest-working village managers in the Northwest suburbs,” Argiris said. “He has the confidence of myself and the entire village board unanimously.”

Sfondilis has worked for the village since 1993. He was making $136,000 as an assistant village manager before being promoted to village manager in 2011. He kept the same salary until the village board increase his pay to $150,000 after a year on the job.

This year’s pay hike comes three months after the village board approved a 75 percent salary increase for the village president and a 33 percent salary increase for village trustees, Those pay hikes go into effect after the April election.

The increases raise the president’s salary from $11,000 to $19,200 annually and trustees’ yearly pay from $6,000 to $8,000. The raises put Wheeling’s salaries in line with neighboring suburban officials’ pay, Argiris has said.
