Trophy will be in Schaumburg:
The Cubs’ World Series trophy’s long offseason tour of the Chicago area will be stopping at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg on Monday night. Fans will have the opportunity to see the trophy and take photos with it from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall on the main level of the building, 201 Schaumburg Court. The tour, which is presented by State Farm, will take the team’s first World Series trophy all around the Midwest. The trophy was created in 1967. Before then, World Series winners did not receive a trophy. It takes Tiffany & Co. master artisans more than three months and more than 200 troy ounces of sterling silver to create the trophy, which is 24 inches tall — not including the base — and 11 inches across. It weighs about 30 pounds. For more information on the trophy tour, check cubs.com/trophytour.
New full-day preschool:
The Schaumburg Park District will begin offering full-day preschool, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for 4-year-olds on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays beginning in September, the district announced. On Wednesday, preschool will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. All classes will take place at the recently renovated Bock Neighborhood Center, 1223 W. Schaumburg Road. “With (Schaumburg Township Elementary School) District 54 going to all day kindergarten, we decided this would be a good way to prepare 4-year-olds for elementary school,” said Teresa Varco, early childhood supervisor, in the park district’s announcement. “Full days will allow for more learning and socialization.” Registration packets will be available Feb. 13 at Bock Neighborhood Center, Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road; Meineke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way; and Pat Shephard Center, 421 N. Springinsguth Road. For more information, call (847) 490-7036 or visit parkfun.com.
Fitness expo on Saturday:
The Arlington Heights Park District will help residents comply with their New Year’s health resolutions with a fitness expo Saturday morning. The expo is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Camelot Community Center, 1005 E. Suffield Drive. The free event features group fitness classes, including family Zumba, body back transformation and family WERQ (a cardio dance workout). A new fitness and wellness zone will have vendors offering products and services. Free smoothies, breakfast samples and chair massages also will be available.
Learn about student aid:
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission is hosting a workshop for students and parents from Maine Township High School District 207 to learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Workshop attendees should bring the required information for both the parents and the students. This information includes Social Security numbers, records of income such as tax returns, information about assets such as savings accounts, stock options and investment real estate, driver’s license numbers, and month and year of marriages, separations and divorces. The workshop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Maine South High School, 1111 S. Dee Road in Park Ridge.
