RotaryFest in Elk Grove Village, the first big festival of summer in the Northwest suburbs, got off to a rainy start on its scheduled first day Wednesday.

Food vendors hid under tents, while others fled to the confines of nearby Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, while heavy thunderstorms ripped through the area early Wednesday evening.

The fest, at 150 Lions Drive, runs through Sunday at Lions Park, featuring bands, a carnival, food, a car show, raffle, fireworks and the Hometown Parade. Festival hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday, 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Visit elkgroverotaryfest.com.
