After nearly five years and 55 games, Burlington Central’s girls basketball team has once again lost a conference game.
Johnsburg put an end to the Rockets’ impressive streak Wednesday night in Burlington, forcing 24 turnovers and holding Central to 7 points in each of the four quarters for a 47-28 victory.
Burlington Central (6-2, 3-1 in the Kishwaukee River Conference) last lost a conference game on Feb. 3, 2012 to Marengo, 53-33.
It was the first time the Rockets have lost in conference under coach Mark Smith, who knew Johnsburg would be quite a measuring stick with all of its key players back while the Rockets graduated theirs.
“If you go back to last year, we put a whupping on them twice,” Smith said. “I’m sure they are ready to play. They have everyone coming back and we have no one coming back. It’s a good team to play against because it’s going to teach our girls.”
Johnsburg, now 8-4 with its losses to 4A powers Fremd, Rolling Meadows, Rock Island and Hersey, leads the Kishwaukee at 5-0.
Aanna Interrante paced the Skyhawks with 20 points and Morgan Madsen scored 14.
“It’s a different team but deep down they are the same,” Johnsburg coach Brad Frey said of the Rockets. “They don’t have the players they had for the last four years, but they play the same way, they play hard. You knew you were in for a fight and we were. It was fun.”
Johnsburg never trailed, scoring the first 6 points. Freshman Kathryn Schmidt sank a 3-pointer to get the Rockets on the board nearly five minutes into the game.
The Rockets battled to stay within 19-14 at halftime. Freshman Zoey Kollhoff’s 2 free throws and a 3-pointer by another freshman, Liliana Moretti, kept Burlington Central close despite 14 first-half turnovers.
“They were twice as aggressive as us and we have to learn from that,” Smith said. “We can’t use the excuse that we’re young because the Madsen girls are sophomores. I’ve never seen girls go to the boards harder than those two and I’m talking about four-year players.”
A 15-foot jumper by Mackenzie West and a 3-pointer from Schmidt early in the third quarter brought the Rockets within 22-19.
The Skyhawks quickly answered with 3-pointers by Cortland Sommerfeldt and Interrante, the start of a 19-2 run that broke the game open. The Skyhawks led by as much as 47-23 in the fourth quarter.
“They just started putting up the baskets and it was hard to come back because they just crashed the boards really hard,” Schmidt said. “I think we really need to work on our boxouts and rebounding aggressively. If we do that next time we’ll do a lot better.”
Schmidt led the Rockets with 12 points and Moretti scored 7.
“They (Johnsburg) really go to the boards,” Smith said. “We couldn’t meet their aggressiveness on the offensive boards especially. They killed us in the second half. We turned the ball over. They are good and we are learning. We’ll chalk it up to experience.”
