Alexandra Fry saved the last of her game-high 5 thefts as a clinching-moment Wednesday night in Aurora.

The Aurora Christian junior, with the Eagles nursing a 1-point lead in their girls basketball game with Rosary, had a steal with less than 50 seconds to play.

Fry, who led Aurora Christian with 15 points, converted two equally crucial free throws six seconds later.

Tori Henning later iced the Eagles’ 37-32 victory at Aurora Christian with another pair at the line with 6.5 seconds remaining.

“I just knew that I had to make them,” said Fry, who had 3 field goals in the second quarter as part of a 7-point frame. “Our defense was really tough on them. Our team moved the ball really well, which enabled me to get open.”

“Alexandra averages 4 steals per game,” Aurora Christian coach Burney Wilkie said. “She is really good at getting hands on basketballs in our 1-3-1 zone defense.”

Rosary (6-3) rallied from a double-digit deficit after Fry provided the Eagles (8-3) with their largest lead of the nonconference game, 31-20, late in the third quarter.

The game had more than one peculiarity as Aurora Christian still prevailed without converting from the field in the final quarter.

Rosary, meanwhile, had only two players score after halftime, which ended with Aurora Christian leading 23-18.

But the Royals stormed back behind senior Lauren Smith.

The Rosary post, who paced all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds, spurred a 12-2 run.

Smith scored with 1:15 to play in the game to reduce the Aurora Christian lead to 33-32.

The senior was also fouled on the play but failed to convert the 3-point opportunity.

“A lot,” Smith said when asked how long she would think about the missed free throw. “In our last game against Resurrection, I hit two free throws (in the final seconds) for the win. I guess I didn’t go up there with the same mindset tonight. When we let ACS get up, It got into our heads. It’s very, very frustrating.”

“I think we came in overconfident,” Rosary coach Phil VanBogaert said. “We didn’t take care of business. We made a few mistakes, and it cost us the game.”

Henning scored 8 of her 12 points in the opening half.

“They did a really good on Tori,” Wilkie said. “She is our leading scorer.”

But the Eagles’ defense was also tenacious as the Royals’ Sophia Kramer was the only player other than Smith to score in the third and fourth quarters.

The Royals missed all eight 3-point attempts in the game.
