Chargers will move to L.A.:

The Chargers plan to announce as early as Thursday that they are moving to Los Angeles, ending a 55-year stint with San Diego and returning to their birthplace, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday night. The Chargers have notified NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and other league owners, of their intent to move to Los Angeles for the 2017 season.

Furyk Ryder Cup captain:

Jim Furyk was appointed Wednesday as the U.S. captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup in France, where his team will try to win on European soil for the first time in 25 years. Furyk was a unanimous choice by the Ryder Cup committee last month.

Vance Joseph to helm Broncos:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A runner-up two years ago, Vance Joseph is John Elway’s pick this time around. “It’s official. Excited to announce Vance Joseph as head coach of the Denver Broncos!” Elway tweeted Wednesday afternoon. The 44-year-old has built a reputation as one of the league’s best secondary coaches as he worked his way through the ranks in San Francisco, Houston and Cincinnati before serving as Dolphins defensive coordinator last season.

Bills hire McDermott as coach:

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y — The Buffalo Bills are putting their faith in Sean McDermott to fix their underperforming defense and restore relevance to a franchise that hasn’t reached the playoffs since January 2000. The Bills agreed Wednesday to hire the Carolina defensive coordinator to be their head coach. The 42-year-old has no previous head-coaching experience and spent the past six seasons overseeing the Panthers’ defense.

Ovechkin gets 1,000th point:

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin wasted no time hitting another milestone and did it in style. Ovechkin scored 35 seconds into the Washington Capitals’ game against Sidney Crosby and the rival Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night to become the 84th player in NHL history to record 1,000 career points.

Nebraska fires DC:

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska coach Mike Riley fired defensive coordinator Mark Banker on Wednesday after the unit underperformed in some of the Cornhuskers’ most important games. Banker coached with Riley for 20 years, including 14 years at Oregon State and the last two at Nebraska.

Windy City Bulls get win:

ERIE, Penn. — The Windy City Bulls (8-12) powered past the Erie BayHawks (6-15) 108-97 on Wednesday night at Erie Insurance Arena. Alfonzo McKinnie and Aaron Thomas led the Windy City Bulls with 22 points apiece. Thomas Walkup had 16 points and 9 assists.

Wolves net win 2-1:

Goaltender Pheonix Copley made 35 saves to backstop the Chicago Wolves to a 2-1 Amtrak Rivalry victory over the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. The win is the Wolves’ and Copley’s fifth consecutive triumph over the Admirals.
