The Arlington Heights Memorial Library is encouraging residents to find their inner genius as part of the third annual One Book, One Village program.

Library Executive Director Jason Kuhl announced “The Geography of Genius: A Search for the World’s Most Creative Places, from Ancient Athens to Silicon Valley” by Eric Weiner was announced as the 2016 book during a presentation to the Arlington Heights village board Monday.

“This program is about drawing together as many people in the community as we can to read the same book and then get together to discuss it and share experiences around themes in the book,” Kuhl said.

“The Geography of Genius” is the first nonfiction book the library has chosen, Kuhl said. The book explores why creative genius flourishes in specific places at specific times by traveling through places from ancient Athens to Renaissance-era Florence to modern-day Silicon Valley

“It’s a book about ideas,” Kuhl said.

The library will have plenty of copies of the book for sale and host a variety of events centered on the book this fall.

In October, the library will team up with WBEZ’s “Sound Opinions” — a music-focused podcast with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot — for a live taping that will look at the genius and creative explosion that happened around punk music in both London and New York City in 1977. The episode, “Punk Rock 1977: The Sound of Genius,” will be taped at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre.

Author Eric Weiner will visit the library at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 for a discussion and book signing.
